Air Conditioning Services in Spanish Fort, AL

Located just east of Mobile across Chacaloochee Bay, Spanish Fort is an upscale community that gives residents easy access to big city life while providing a quiet refuge at the end of the day. Residents can hop on I-10 and find themselves in Mobile in less than 10 minutes, but there’s plenty to do without leaving home.

A History Buff’s Dream

Spanish Fort has nearly 300 years of history behind it, and history buffs from across the country will want to check it out at least one time. Shortly after Mobile’s founding in 1712, the city constructed a large trading post in what would later become Spanish Fort, which remained in French hands until the French and Indian War in 1763. However, it would not become part of the United States until the War of 1812.

Half a century later, the Confederate forces stationed in the area began fortifying Spanish Fort to defend Mobile from an eastern assault. A Union army with 32,000 soldiers marched to Spanish Fort in March 1865 and began an overwhelming assault the following month. The Battle of Spanish Fort lasted a single day because the Union forces had twice the artillery and several times the men, and the Confederate forces retreated to Fort Huger that night. However, the Confederate defenders had delayed the Union army for several weeks and bought Mobile precious time.

Attractions and Events

Even though it’s a relatively small and close-knit community, Spanish Fort doesn’t lack for shopping. Residents and visitors will always find something new at the local consignment, antique, and art galleries. Two full-sized malls located at either end of the city sell everything from clothing to electronics.

Residents flock to Blakely State Park every year to enjoy the boat tours and local wildlife such as bears, coyotes, and herons. History buffs will also want to visit Blakely State Park to tour the field and battlements upon which the Battle of Fort Blakely was fought, which was notable for being one of the final battles of the Civil War. In fact, the battle ended on the same day that General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union forces in Virginia.

Everyday Life

Spanish Fort children attend schools in the Baldwin County Public School District, one of the top-performing districts in the entire state. With a median household value of $193,000, Spanish Fort is home to thousands of well-constructed and beautiful houses and condos. The median household income of $70,000 is also significantly higher than the state average.

The excellent school system and upscale shopping continue to attract new residents from across the state. The population grew 6.2 percent between 2010 and 2012, making it one of the fastest growing communities in all of Alabama. Even though the population is only about 7,500, Spanish Fort residents operate more than 900 businesses and generate more than $215 million in retail sales every year.
