Mobile’s early European settlement began with the arrival of French Canadian brothers in 1702. Early development included the establishment of a Roman Catholic parish and the arrival of additional colonists. However, some of these early settlers contracted yellow fever in Havana on the way to the region, impacting both Europeans and Native Americans upon their arrival. At the end of the French and Indian War in 1763, Mobile was ceded to the British. Mobile was later captured by Bernardo de Galvez as the Spanish allied with France during the American Revolutionary War. The area was taken by the United States during the War of 1812.
